REDS vs ROSSONERI - THE STORY SO FAR
United 2-1 Milan, 08.05.58, European Cup semi-final 1st leg
A patched-up XI - including four survivors of February’s Munich air crash - gave a spirited display, winning with goals from Dennis Viollet and Ernie Taylor (pen).
Milan 4-0 United, 14.05.58, European Cup semi-final 2nd leg
An arduous trek – the Reds arrived just 25 minutes before kick-off – and a hostile reception teed up a torrid test. Harry Gregg admitted, “Milan were a class above us.”
Milan 2-0 United, 23.04.69, European Cup semi-final 1st leg
The Reds’ cause was hit by Nobby Stiles limping off and John Fitzpatrick’s sending off. “Some of the decisions were absolutely disgraceful,” complained Paddy Crerand.
United 1-0 Milan, 15.05.69, European Cup semi-final 2nd leg
Bobby Charlton broke through in the 70th minute but despite besieging the Milan goal, the Reds couldn’t equalise on aggregate - although a clear Denis Law goal was disallowed.
United 0-1 Milan, 23.02.05, Champions League 2nd round 1st leg
The Italians gained their first win on English soil when Hernan Crespo punished an error by Reds keeper Roy Carroll in the 78th minute. Sir Alex said: “The opportunities we had in the first half were rushed.”
Milan 1-0 United, 08.03.05, Champions League 2nd round 2nd leg
The Rossoneri gave the perfect lesson in how to defend a slender advantage. Crespo scored the only goal again, cleverly looping a header over Tim Howard to seal the tie and book a final place opposite Liverpool.
United 3-2 Milan, 24.04.07, Champions League semi-final 1st leg
Ronaldo drew first blood, only for Kaka to strike twice. Rooney converted a sumptuous Paul Scholes pass to equalise on the hour – and then lashed his second goal past Dida to win the home leg in injury time.
Milan 3-0 United, 02.05.07, Champions League semi-final 2nd leg
Carlo Ancelotti’s side proved too strong as Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Pippo Inzaghi completed a comprehensive win. Milan went on to be worthy champions of Europe, beating Liverpool in the final.

Owen Hargreaves will be back soon
"Owen’s recovery is slow. It's been a year and a half now and I can't put a time on it. But he will be back; he could come back and make an impact in the league and hopefully he will," Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Owen Hargreaves will return to action this season despite leaving the midfielder out of his Champions League squad.
The boss opted to omit the 29-year-old from his 25-man squad for the latter stages of the competition knowing he would not be fit for the Reds’ last 16 tie with AC Milan.
“It would be nice to think we could get to the Champions League final and I could have Owen available. But we’re not in the final yet, we’ve got to beat AC Milan first and if I was to pick Owen then it would mean I'd have to leave another important player out and that player could be the one I need against Milan,” explained the Scot.
“The decision wasn’t about the latter part of the campaign, it was to do with the AC Milan game and Owen won’t be available for that. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions, but it's the correct one.”
Hargreaves had major knee surgery in November 2008 in a bid to cure a long-standing tendonitis problem and has been undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme since. Sir Alex is convinced the England international will make a successful return this season and bolster the Reds’ bid for a fourth consecutive title.
“Owen’s recovery is slow. It's been a year and a half now and I can't put a time on it," admitted the boss. "But he will be back; he could come back and make an impact in the league and hopefully he will.
“There are more games in the league than there are in Europe and I don't need to register him for the league."

Vidic could face Portsmouth this Saturday
Sir Alex says Nemanja Vidic is "in contention" to start against Portsmouth at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The defender was left out of the Reds’ squad that travelled to Arsenal last weekend after suffering a setback in his recovery from a nerve problem in his leg. But according to the United boss, the 28-year-old has trained well over the last week.
His return would be a huge boost for the Reds, not least because Rio Ferdinand is still suspended and Brazilian defender Rafael picked up a knock at the Emirates.
"Rafa got a knock against Arsenal, but hopefully he'll train today," the boss said. "Vidic has trained for the last few days and hopefully that will bring him into contention for Saturday. Everyone else is okay."
The Reds welcome bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth to Old Trafford for a game Sir Alex described as “one we have to win."
"Our result at the Emirates last week was important and hopefully it’ll send us in the right direction towards the title," he said. "Winning against Portsmouth is very important and it’s the kind of game we’ve navigated quite well over the years.
"After the win at Arsenal it's important we kick on from here. As every game comes along in the run-in they become more important. It doesn’t matter who it’s against, we have to take three points from every one now."
